Stroll over Charles Bridge and see the old town and astronomical clock – plus breathtaking Prague Castle.
- Český Krumlov lies 120 miles south or a 2-hour 15-minute Prague Airport transfer. This fairytale-style town with its red roofs is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in South Bohemia. The thirteenth-century castle with its 11 hectares of gardens and varying architectural styles is a must-see, as is Egon Schiele Art Centrum.
- Karlovy Vary is 75 miles west, or a 90-minute trip from the airport. It’s a thoroughly Czech spa town full of Bohemian culture and history. Visit Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral and various fourteenth-century buildings – take your swimming gear for the hot springs!
- České Budějovice is 105 miles south, or within a two-hour Prague Airport transfer. South Bohemia’s biggest town is steeped in history, with buildings including the sixteenth-century Black Tower. It’s also the home of Budvar Beer – why not visit the brewery?
- Pilsen is located 56 miles south-west; cover them in just over an hour from the airport. Pilsen is surrounded by gorgeous countryside. It’s also home to the lager of the same name, and you can visit both the Pilsner Urquell Brewery and the Ruckle Crystal Factory. (Perhaps do the latter first, given the beer’s strength!)
- Kutna Hora is 65 miles east, or a 1 hour 20-minute Prague Airport transfer. Explore this medieval town, in an area known for silver mining. See the bones in the Sedlec Ossuary, plus the UNESCO World Heritage-listed gothic St Barbara’s Cathedral.
Places to go from Prague Airport
- The National Park Bohemian Switzerland lies 81.5 miles north – allow 1 hour 45 minutes for the transfer from Prague Airport. (It’s not actually in Switzerland!) In this picturesque area, learn about local flora and fauna and hike for between one and seven hours.
- Karlštejn Castle is a 30-minute Prague Airport transfer or 21 miles south-west. A fairytale specimen with towers and turrets, it was built in 1348 and is surrounded by woodland which is great for walking. It’s popular with tourists, especially in summer.
- Koněprusy Caves are 21 miles or just a 30-minute hop from Vaclav Herel Airport. The caves are safe and well-illuminated, and constitute Bohemia’s longest cave system. See the Roses of Koněprusy, an exhibition featuring all the archaeological finds from the cavern complex., and combine this day trip from Prague with visiting nearby Karlštejn Castle.
- Aquapalace is just under 30 miles and just over half an hour from Prague Airport. With plenty of adrenaline-fuelling waterslides and a spa, it’s fun for the whole family. There’s also an indoor complex here for when Prague’s winter kicks in.
- Terezin Concentration Camp is within an hour’s drive or 40 miles north of Prague. Learn the history of one of the country’s largest camps of its kind, and visit Terezin Memorial. Take in the story of Jewish prisoners during World War II In this challenging, poignant, unique and important place.
- Český ráj lies some 66 miles north-east, with Prague Airport transfers taking 1 hour 15 minutes. Expect parkland with fascinating rock formations, stunning vistas and a rugged landscape. The hiking here is amazing, especially if you trek out to the Prachov Rocks.
