Visit the old quarter near the harbour and its tapas bars and restaurants; there’s also a decent choice of nightlife.
- Betancuria is 20 miles west and inland; be there in 40 minutes. Packed with old buildings, it was founded in 1404 and has a gorgeous church and two museums. Think exquisite white structures, and abundant flowers; there are also some stunning views.
- Puerto del Rosario itself is just seven minutes and a few miles north by airport transfer. The island’s capital is a busy port, known for its whitewashed buildings and open-air art such as the snail sculptures on the prom. Playa Chica near the harbour is a sheltered beach; to the south, Playa Blanca has a strong surf. This is also an excellent town for dining and shopping.

- The Salt Museum is at Salinas del Carmen, 6.5miles or 10 minutes’ drive south. Learn how salt is taken from the sea at the onsite factory, and about the importance of salt to the island. Great for a cloudy afternoon and more interesting than it sounds!
- Entallada Lighthouse lies 25 miles south – cover the distance in 40-odd minutes by Fuerteventura Airport transfer. Built in the 1950s, it’s an impressive structure. Admire the views across to Africa – it’s the closest point to the continent in the Canaries.
- Oasis Park is 34 miles south-west; allow up to an hour to travel from the airport. This animal park is also a botanical garden with a wonderful cacti collection. There’s a kids’ farm, camel rides bird of prey and animal shows, making it perfect the whole family.
