- Las Palmas is the island’s capital – cover the 12 miles south from the airport in 20 minutes. Bask on Las Canteras beach, visit the Science Museum or stroll Vegueta’s cobbled streets, taking in the amazing architecture. Combine sightseeing with plenty of al fresco stops for coffee, lunch or tapas. (Or all three!)
- Teror lies nearly 22 miles north-west in the hills – a 35-minute Gran Canaria airport transfer. It’s a well-preserved town featuring many wooden balconies typical of the Canaries. Visit the Cistercian monastery and famous Basilica in the square, and catch the Sunday market.
- Puerto de Mogán is 35 miles away on the south-west coast – be there in 50 minutes. It’s an attractive town with a picturesque harbour and a great beach for snorkelling. The many local bridges and canals have earned the town the nickname ‘Little Venice’ – you’ll also find some brilliant fish restaurants here.
- Firgas lies 23 miles north or 40 minutes by Gran Canaria Airport transfer. It dates from 1488, and its square and church are especially beautiful. Two sloping pedestrian areas incorporate a 30m artificial waterfall in this compact historic town, surrounded by natural landscapes.

- Santa Ana Cathedral lies 13 miles north or a 20-minute airport run. Work on the twin-towered structure in Vegueta began in 1500. It incorporates Gothic, Renaissance and Neoclassical styles and houses many works of art. Take the lift up the south tower for breathtaking views.
- Cueva Pintada Museum and Archaelogical Park at Gáldar are further north at 40 miles or 45 minutes by Gran Canaria Airport transfer. The ‘Painted Cave’ of the name is one of a group in the volcanic rock which you can see alongside the remains of a former village. Book a guided tour.
- Maspalomas Dunes are 21 miles or 25 minutes away by Gran Canaria Airport transfer. See them with a camel ride and admire views across the Sahara-like landscape. Visit Maspalomas beach and lighthouse afterwards.
- Roque Nublo is 25 miles or an hour’s drive through the mountains at Tejeda. This famous landmark is a UNESCO-protected 80m volcanic rock. Trek to see it and its ‘sibling’, Roque de la Rana, on a 5km circular trek incorporating incredible views.
