Budapest Airport Transfers

• Budapest itself, 15 miles or 35 minutes by Budapest Airport transfer, is bisected by the Danube. It’s home to the world’s second-largest synagogue and some 80 geothermal springs. The nineteenth-century Chain Bridge links Buda and Pest; don’t miss the thirteenth-century Matthias Church or the views and turrets of the Fishermen’s Bastion.
• Eger is located 86 miles or some 90 minutes north-east. Highlights include the cathedral, central square, its 17 Baroque churches, medieval castle and nineteenth-century basilica, with towers and breathtaking views. Explore the old town and the network of thermal baths.
• Szentendre is 31 miles north or a 40-minute hop from Budapest. This arty, colourful Danube town is quaint, attractive and laid-back. Check out the frescoes and Baroque archways of Blagoveshchensk Church before heading to the arty-crafty markets for a spot of shopping.
• Győr is 95 miles north-west or nearly an hour and 40 minutes from the airport. Charming and compact, this town on the Little Hungarian Plain is nestled between three rivers, including the Danube. It’s full of beautiful Baroque buildings and has a stunning old town.
• Esztergom is 50 or so miles north-west – or 1 hour 10 minutes by Budapest Airport transfer. Dominated by the basilica, it also has a former royal palace, 400-year-old mosque, and some great cafes. It’s been the seat of Hungary’s Roman Catholics for over a millennium.
• Pécs is 137 miles south-west or a 2 hour 15-minute airport run, in the Mecsek Mountains. Its attractions include early Christian burial chambers, Turkish mosques, modern galleries and medieval structures. Don’t miss the Cathedral Precincts, or Szénchenyi tér, the medieval marketplace.

1. Lake Balaton is just over 100 miles south-west – allow nearly 1 hour 40 minutes for your Budapest Airport transfer. Europe’s biggest freshwater lake is surrounded by countryside, and there’s plenty to do from sporting activities to visiting historic towns and vineyards.
2. Gödöllő Palace lies 20-odd miles north – cover them with a 30-minute airport run. This well-preserved Baroque palace was the summer escape of Emperor Franz Joseph. Take in the gardens, stables and parkland plus the stunningly beautiful palace.
3. Aggtelek National Park and the Baradla Cave is 150 miles north-east or 2 hours 40 minutes by Budapest Airport transfer. The UNESCO World Heritage Site covers nearly 200 sq km. Expect unique flora and fauna and an extensive network of hiking trails. Don’t miss the cave; it’s one of Europe’s biggest stalactite canyons.
4. The Hungarian Open-Air Museum is around 14 miles or a Budapest Airport transfer of just over 30 minutes. Enjoy the recreation of eighteenth-century Hungarian settlements, including a church, forge, barn and weaving workshop. There’s a train ride and guided tours.
5. The Castle of Diósgyor is 120 miles or so north-east, but worth the two-hour Budapest Airport transfer. Constructed in 1340 and fashioned on southern Italian castles, Diósgyor has four towers but is mainly ruined, albeit with some reconstruction, and you can appreciate the size of the Knights’ Hall and chapel.
6. Pannonhalma Monastery lies 100 miles north-west – allow 1 hour 45 minutes to travel from the airport. Founded in 969, it has gothic cloisters plus a nineteenth-century library. Its location, on a hill between the Bakony region’s wooded hills and the Little Plain, offers tremendous views.
