Malta Airport Transfers

1. Mellieħa is nearly 14 miles north and reachable within 30 minutes. The family-friendly resort is near Mellieħa Bay, Malta’s largest sandy beach, and offers numerous mid-range hotels. The steep streets of this town offer a glimpse of genuine Maltese life.
2. St Julian’s is almost 6.5 miles north or 15 minutes by Malta Airport transfer. It combines a historic coastal town with modern tourist developments and buzzing nightlife. It’s great for dining out; local beaches are generally rocky.
3. Sliema is a similar distance from the airport on the east coast. There’s a prom, an eighteenth-century fort plus St Julian’s Tower, a seventeenth-century watchtower and battery. Meanwhile, the baroque Stella Maris church dates from the 1850s.
4. Valletta is five miles from the airport – be there in 15 minutes. Stroll the walled city’s narrow streets of limestone walls and wooden balconies. From majestic St John’s Co-Cathedral to the National War Museum, City Gate and Grand Harbour, there’s loads to enjoy here.
5. Qawra is 13.5 miles away or under 40 minutes from the airport. On a peninsula between two bays (St Paul’s and Salina), it has three seafronts and offers numerous watersports. It’s near nightlife while being quiet itself. Don’t miss the parish church, or classic car museum.
6. Mdina is west and inland – cover the seven miles within 20 minutes by Malta Airport transfer. The car-free ‘Silent City’ offers incredible views and a compact centre. Stroll medieval alleyways and see the Carmelite church and priory plus the Natural History Museum.

1. Popeye Village is some 14.5 miles north-west, reachable within 30 minutes by Malta Airport transfer. The former film set, with Popeye and friends as hosts, incorporates a beach lido, water trampolines and boat rides, plus a winery for grown-ups! Inside, there’s a Popeye comic museum and huge kids’ play area.
2. The Upper Barrakka Gardens are 5.5 miles north, or a 20-minute airport run. Perched above the Grand Harbour, these colonnaded gardens dating from 1661 command impressive views. As well as the relaxing gardens, you can take in outdoor artwork. Make it a double bill with the Lascaris War Rooms below the site.
3. Palazzo Falson is within 30 minutes by Malta Airport transfer, lying around eight miles north-west at Mdina. Tour this exquisitely preserved medieval mansion and visit the gorgeous courtyard, kitchen and chapel. Construction began in 1495. Afterwards, relax in the rooftop café.
4. The Grand Master’s Palace is just over five miles north, or a 20-minute Malta Airport transfer. Home to the Knights of St John until 1798, it housed the Maltese parliament until 2015. See this splendid building and the art work, arms, armour and state rooms encompassing 450 years of history.
5. Hagar Qim is nearly five miles south west; be there in 15 minutes from the airport. Malta’s best-preserved prehistoric site encompasses standing stones and a megalith forming a series of three temples dating back to 3000 BC in a dramatic clifftop setting; the visitors’ centre is great, too.
6. Golden Bay is just over five miles north-east: so it’s roughly a 15-minute airport run. One of the few sandy beaches locally, it’s popular and with good facilities. Visit at sunset – when it truly lives up to its name!

This airport is designed to be accessible to all travellers. There are disabled toilet facilities on-site, and if you or someone you’re travelling with has reduced mobility, you can book specialist help in advance. Present yourself at the relevant meeting point on arrival. Other facilities include hearing loops, lifts and elevating platforms, priority seating plus water fountains at different heights.
