Trips to enjoy from Bangkok International Airport
  1. Bang Saen Beach is 50-odd miles away, so you can be there within the hour. It’s packed with beachfront eateries and bars and a pleasant palm-lined promenade. The beach itself, the closest to the city, is over a mile and a half long.
  2. Ayutthaya, a former Siamese capital, is a 75-minute Suvarnabhumi Airport transfer north. The UNESCO World Heritage Site has interesting ruins and temple complexes – look out for Buddha’s head in the tree roots at Wat Mahathat, and take in the historic park.
  3. Khao Yai National Park is two hours north-east, 90-odd miles from the airport. It features an array of nature, wildlife and scenic landscapes plus stunning waterfalls. Trek through this incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site to experience it all.
  4. Koh Samet Island is around a three-hour trip from Bangkok, but you won’t regret the journey. Think turquoise waters and bone-white sand, superb activities and incredible food. Ao Wai is one of the quieter beaches if you’re after tranquility.
  5. Dream World lies 40-odd miles north; i.e. a Suvarnabhumi Airport transfer within the hour. (Book your ride; public transport here is tricky.) This theme park includes water rides, rollercoasters, a smaller replication of Disney’s Main Street and indoor winter-based fun at Snow Town.
  6. The Samut Sakhon ‘floating’ vineyards are 22 miles south, or a Bangkok Airport transfer within 40 minutes. The vineyards are built on fertile land reclaimed from the Chao Phraya delta. Take a tour and sample the produce, although these are working vineyards and not designed solely for tourists

You should find Bangkok International accessible, and the staff helpful. Having only opened in 2006, Suvarnabhumi is still relatively new, and has been designed with access in mind. Tell your airline if you use a wheelchair, are visually impaired or need other specific assistance. The airport has electric carts, lift access to all levels, plus good disabled toilet facilities. Talk to your travel operator if you’re bringing a service dog, as you may experience extra restrictions.
