Istanbul Airport Transfers

• Bursa lies 116 miles south – an Istanbul Airport transfer takes around two hours. This city in the foothills of Mt Uludağ near the Sea of Marmara. Wander among historic sites and enjoy the dramatic backdrop, parks and greenery plus the fourteenth-century Great Mosque.
• Taksim is 26 miles south and barely a 45-minute run from Istanbul Airport. Enjoy a lively atmosphere, ride a tram or visit Gezi Park. See the iconic Galata Tower, and take in St Anthony of Padua Church plus the Madame Tussauds Wax Museum.
• Edirne is located 132 miles to the north-west; allow two hours to get there. See incredible Ottoman-era architecture as you visit the Selimiye Mosque, the Grand Bazaar, the nineteenth-century New Bridge plus the Tower Gate from the 1300s.
• Kilyos is found 20 miles to the east, so Istanbul Airport transfers are doable within 45 minutes. This Black Sea resort town enjoys a lively nightlife and has great beaches. Don’t miss the fourteenth-century Genoese castle.
• Sile lies 57 miles to the east, or just over an hour by road from the airport. Another coastal town, it’s a charming place with sandy beach and a harbour where you can sample the catch. Check out the nearby lighthouse, and visit the nearby pretty town of Ağva.
• Polonezkoy is less than 40 miles to the east, or an Istanbul Airport transfer within an hour, on the Asian side of the city. Rich in natural beauty and history, and thoroughly charming, it has a Polish community, and is ideal for picnics, walks and sampling Turkish cuisine.

1. Sapanca Lake is 107 miles south-east, around two hours away by road. This freshwater lake lies between the Gulf of Izmit and the Adapazari Meadow. There are stunning views, plus excellent outdoor activities. Combine with a trip to Darica Zoo and Masukiye village.
2. Belgrad Forest lies 18 miles east, or a 40-minute Istanbul Airport transfer. The city’s greenest area is perfect for running, walking, mountain biking – or simply enjoying a picnic in the deciduous woodland. The name comes from the Serbs who were transferred to the city following the 1521 siege of Belgrade.
3. Princes’ Islands are 33 miles south; be there within the hour from Istanbul Airport. This cluster of islands in the Sea of Marmara, is known for panoramic views, pine forests and museum. Travel here by ferry.
4. The Blue Mosque lies less than 40 miles south, so Istanbul Airport transfers are possible within the hour. Also named Sultan Ahmet mosque, this stunning, must-see historical site has blue tiles and can appear blue at sunset. Built in the Ottoman era, it’s still an active place of worship.
5. Golden Horn is 26 miles south and reachable within an hour from the airport. This is one the world’s finest natural harbours, a curving inlet opening up from the Bosphorus by Galata Bridge. Visit the historic cemetery and pilgrimage site of Eyüp, plus the fifteenth-century mosque.
6. Pierre Loti Hill is 22 miles or a 50-minute airport run. This wooded hill is an area of green space offering one of the city’s best waterway views from its summit. A good path takes you up, but there’s a cable car too. It’s equally stunning at night.

You should find Istanbul pretty good for disabled access. There are sufficient lifts, and several accessible, wheelchair-friendly loos. If you need help boarding your aircraft, seek this from your airline before you travel. Wheelchairs are available here, but, again, make arrangements with your airline pre-departure.

Visually impaired travellers can access ‘Loud Steps’, while a single-lane accessible route joins the tactile paving at the airport entrance to the information point. It runs throughout the disabled priority entrance.
