1. Helensburgh is a little over 20 miles north, and you can make the trip within 40 minutes. With its handsome architecture and tree-lined streets, it’s an elegant, historic town. Stroll through the 55-acre Duchess Woods – or why not take out a kayak?

3. Edinburgh is 55 miles away – make the journey east in just over an hour. The compact, hilly Scottish capital has an Old Town and elegant Georgian New Town with gardens and neoclassical buildings. Then there’s the castle, plus the imposing peak and sweeping views of Arthur’s Seat.
4. Glasgow itself is packed with attractions, from the various intriguing neighbourhoods and interesting eateries to Buchanan Street’s designer stores or the weekend flea market, The Barras. It’s also packed with art and heritage, including the Kelvingrove Gallery and the modern Riverside Museum in the harbour.
5. Greenock lies 17 miles west – cover it in half an hour. This historic industrial town by the Firth of Clyde is a former fishing community and was the Clyde’s first dock. Don’t miss the 245-foot Victoria Tower, McLean Museum or the sixteenth-century Old West Kirk. Take in some impressive Victorian architecture, at the same time.
6. Troon is nearly 40 miles south-west – reach it in under an hour via Glasgow Airport transfer. This Ayrshire coastal town overlooking the Isle of Arran is probably best known for its golf course but also has many seaside attractions, making for a relaxing day out.

1. Bothwell Castle: This is within a 30-minute Glasgow Airport transfer, and lies 15 miles to the east. Semi-ruined, it’s Scotland’s biggest and best thirteenth-century castle, and was fought over during the Wars of Independence.
2. Braehead Shopping Centre: Located by the M8, this is a four-mile or eight-minute hop from the airport. Alongside numerous stores including household-name brands, there are many places to grab some food. It’s also home to an arena, ice rink and maritime heritage centre.
3. Glasgow Science Centre: On the banks of the Clyde, this attraction is just seven miles distant, making for Glasgow Airport transfers in 15 minutes. A Science Mall displays dozens of interactive learning exhibits, plus there’s an on-site IMAX cinema.
4. Pollok House is less than 15 minutes away, just under six miles from the airport. Dating from 1750, it’s set in the grounds of Pollok Park. There are hundreds of rhododendron varieties in the grounds, while art, silver and ceramics are all displayed inside.
5. Paisley Moss Nature Reserve is barely more than a mile from the airport, so it’s a great local place for recharging after a flight. A boardwalk ensures year-round access, and there are hundreds of wildlife, bird and plant species in this hidden oasis, incorporating marshes and reeds. It’s a great family excursion, and you can walk around it in an hour.
6. Glasgow Cathedral is some 10.5 miles away, so an airport transfer can have you there within 20 minutes. This imposing twelfth-century structure houses one of the nation’s finest collections of stained-glass windows – don’t miss the grand crypt or Victorian gothic cemetery.

Equally, Glasgow regularly consults local disability groups. Meanwhile accessible loos, a Changing Places facility offering extra equipment, and induction loops for hearing aid users are all clearly signposted.
