- Funchal is 8 miles away and reachable in 20-odd minutes. Madeira’s ridiculously picturesque capital is surrounded by hills covered in orange-roofed houses. Visit Santa Catarina Park, Monte Palace Madeira, the cathedral and market. Stroll down the vibrant Rua de Santa Maria and pop into the Cristiano Ronaldo Museum.
- Porto Moniz is 40 miles north-west, or an hour-long Madeira Airport transfer. Known for its natural volcanic pools, this town is ideal for swimming. Additionally, call in at São João Batista Fort, dating from 1730 and currently home to Madeira Aquarium.

- Câmara de Lobos is 16 miles west, or a 25-minute journey from Madeira Airport. This fishing town with its brightly coloured boats is overlooked by some of Europe’s highest cliffs, the Cabo Girão. Winston Churchill lived and painted locally. Stroll along the cobbled streets and harbour.

- Madeira Botanical Garden is 10 miles south, or a 20-minute Madeira Airport transfer. A mile from central Funchal, high above the city, you’ll enjoy splendid panoramas plus hundreds of plant species across the exotic gardens. Check out Parrot Park!
- Sao Vicente Caves lie 31 miles off on the north coast, or a 50-minute run from the airport. Learn about volcanoes at the visitor centre, walk the complex of volcanic tunnels with a guide and stroll through the nearby gardens.
- Funchal Cable Car is around 12 miles south-west; cover them in 20-25 minutes with a Madeira Airport transfer. Enjoy breathtaking vistas over city and island during your 20-minute ride up the mountain, and visit the ornamental Monte Gardens at the top.
- Whale Museum, Canical is 6.5 miles north up the coast; get there within 15 minutes from the airport. Based in a small village, it looks at Madeira’s role in the whaling industry and educates visitors about whales through audio sets, interactive areas and headsets.
- Madeira Theme Park is nearly 14 miles north-west – a Madeira Airport transfer should take under 30 minutes. Don’t expect Alton Towers, but there’s a playground, maze, windmill and boating lake plus an exhibition centre showcasing Madeira’s history and traditions.
