1. Liverpool has stacks to offer, from its maritime history to today’s amazing shopping, entertainment and dining. Stroll along the waterfront and Albert Dock, absorb some Beatles heritage or visit one of the city’s many superb museums.
2. Chester is 25 miles due south or within 45-50 minutes by Liverpool Airport transfer. Walk the ancient city walls, get a photo by the famous Eastgate clock, visit the centuries-old cathedral and see the unique rows of shops housed in medieval buildings on two levels.
3. Manchester is around 33 miles to the north-east, and you can be there within an hour. It offers endless cultural, culinary and shopping experiences. You could explore different areas like the Northern Quarter, visit a huge array of museums and galleries or take in Manchester Cathedral or the Grade I-listed John Rylands library.
4. Formby is 20 miles away or within 40 minutes by road, and offers glorious sandy beaches, plus hiking across historic farmland and woodland. Scour the sand for prehistoric footprints or do walks focused on red squirrels or asparagus cultivation.
5. Southport lies to the north, a similar distance away to Manchester. It’s a resort town on the Irish Sea coast, with lots for visitors to see from the pier, botanical gardens and other open spaces to arcades and seaside attractions. There’s even a lawnmower museum!
6. Wrexham is within 40 miles or an hour’s drive of Liverpool John Lennon in North Wales. With a fascinating history, it’s home to Wales’s biggest medieval church, the gothic sixteenth-century Parish Church of St Giles. It’s a great base for exploring the surrounding area, full of woodland and castles.

1. Knowsley Safari Park: This is just 10 miles away and reachable by Liverpool Airport transfer within 20 minutes. Get up close and personal with the animals on foot or by car. Or book a place on the Baboon Bus! Watch out for lions, tigers, rhinos, giraffe and meerkats.
2. Anfield Stadium lies due south, a similar distance away to Knowsley. Home to Liverpool Football Club since 1892, it’s a Mecca for fans. Take in the museum and do the Anfield Origins Tour which brings the club’s history and architecture to life.
3. Hilbre Islands Nature Reserve on the Wirral is 22-odd miles due west of Liverpool, or 45 minutes by airport transfer. These three tidal islands are designated local nature reserves, and a beautiful place to visit for seal and bird-watching. There’s an informative exhibition plus the chance to spot some rare wildlife.
4. Mersey Ferries are available from near central Liverpool, within eight miles of the airport. Hop aboard and take in the city’s dramatic skyline, incorporating the UNESCO World Heritage-designated waterfront. Equally, a U-boat story exhibition offers a fascinating insight into life as a World War II submariner.
5. Aintree Racecourse is 20 minutes away by airport transfer. The home of the Grand National, it was opened in 1829. Enjoy a tour or just a superb day at the races. Remember to have a flutter!
6. Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet is 20 miles or 45 minutes distant. This open-air centre has dozens of stores and restaurants offering big-name designer brands at marked-down prices. An essential stop-off for shopaholics everywhere.
